  1. Catalog Entry: CS 387. Topics in Software Engineering. Topics may include empirical software engineering and open-source software engineering. Prerequisite: 278 or consent of instructor. SPRING. [3].

  2. Objectives and Methodology: The aim of CS387 (Topics in Software Engineering) in Fall 2009 is to investigate open-source software engineering in depth by studying a wide variety of published research papers.

  3. Prerequisite: The prerequisite for the course is CS278 (Software Engineering Principles) or an equivalent course in object-oriented software engineering. Undergraduates are welcome in CS 387, provided they have a gpa of at least 3.2/4.0.

  4. Papers to be studied: The papers we will study are listed on the Oak site for this course (in the "Course Information" section).

  5. Presentations: The most important skill that a software engineer has to possess (other than pure technical skills) is the ability to communicate. Most of a software engineer's time is spent communicating with clients, managers, team members, users, and so on. A primary objective of this course is to ensure that students become highly skilled in audiovisual and written communications.

  6. Grades: Grades will be assigned as follows:
    Presentations 45%
    Essays 45%
    Class participation 10%

  7. Disabilities: Vanderbilt is committed to equal opportunity for students with disabilities. If you have a physical or learning disability, you should ask the Opportunity Development Center to assist you in identifying yourself to your instructors as having a disability, so that appropriate accommodation may be provided. Absent notification, your instructors assume that you have no disabilities or seek no accommodation.

  8. Emergency Evacuation Plans: In the event of a fire or other emergency, the occupants of this class should collect coats and personal belongings and leave the building via Stairway 1 (the open stairway leading to the Atrium) and exit via the Tower Door. The class should assemble on the lawn in front of McTyeire. VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY POLICY FORBIDS REENTRY TO A BUILDING IN WHICH AN ALARM HAS OCCURRED WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION BY VANDERBILT SECURITY. If, as a consequence of a disability, you anticipate the need for assistance, please discuss that need with me.

  9. Ice: If the roads are covered with ice I will not be able to drive to Vanderbilt. If class is canceled, I will endeavor to put a posting at the top of this page.

  10. Honor System Requirements: All essays and presentations are to be done solely by the student.
